THE LONG WAIT · 2025

The Second Rebuild

Conference USA lost nine programs to the American Athletic in 2023 — the largest single season exodus in FBS conference history. The league rebuilt with programs making the jump from FCS: Jacksonville State, Kennesaw State, and Sam Houston, alongside Liberty. The question was whether a conference composed almost entirely of programs still establishing FBS legitimacy could hold a coherent identity. Three seasons in, it remains open.

Liberty and Western Kentucky have both proven they can win double-digit games from the Conference USA footprint. Which program makes the bowl run that resets the perception of what Conference USA can produce in the post-exodus era?

Three Things to Watch

The StandardWestern Kentucky's Air Raid Is Still Running

Western Kentucky has run one of the most explosive offensive systems in G5 football for a decade. Under Tyson Helton, they won back-to-back Conference USA titles in 2021-22 and reached three bowl games in four years. They enter 2026 with the conference's highest power rating and the offensive identity that keeps opposing defensive coordinators up at night before Bowling Green.

The Wild CardLiberty's Evangelical Model and a 13-Win Season

Liberty went 13-0 in the regular season in 2023 as an FBS independent, then joined Conference USA. Hugh Freeze built the program from a non-scholarship FCS team to a 13-win FBS contender in eight years before leaving for Auburn. The program that replaced him inherited a roster, a fanbase, and a Lynchburg, Virginia campus that believes it belongs in this conversation.

The New EraJacksonville State: FCS-to-FBS in One Step

Jacksonville State won multiple FCS national championships at the SWAC and Southland level, then moved directly to FBS and Conference USA in 2023. They are still building the recruiting depth that FBS requires, but their program culture — built on winning and coaching continuity — is the template for what a successful FCS-to-FBS transition looks like three years in.
