The Celebration

The MEAC and SWAC champions meet every December in Atlanta for the Celebration Bowl — the de facto HBCU national championship, which routinely draws 40,000+ fans and national broadcast attention that neither conference's FCS playoff path could generate. The MEAC leads the all-time Celebration Bowl series 7–3. North Carolina Central, Norfolk State, and Howard have all built programs that compete for the title. The MEAC's identity is inseparable from that game and the broader HBCU athletic tradition it represents.

Howard's recruiting profile rose nationally after Deion Sanders spotlighted HBCU football at Jackson State. Does any MEAC program carry that momentum into a Celebration Bowl title, or does the structural advantage return to the SWAC's deeper recruiting base?

Three Things to Watch

The StandardNorth Carolina Central's MEAC Dominance

North Carolina Central has won six MEAC titles since 2012 and appeared in the Celebration Bowl four times. Their program — built on developing players from the Carolinas pipeline — is the MEAC's most consistent winner and the one program that regularly enters the Celebration Bowl as the de facto favorite. They enter 2026 with the MEAC's highest power rating and the clearest path to Atlanta.

The Rising ProgramHoward's National Moment

Howard's profile rose with the national HBCU spotlight that Deion Sanders lit at Jackson State — recruits started to pay attention to HBCU programs they would have dismissed in 2019. Howard is in Washington D.C., recruits the DMV pipeline, and has an alumni network that can support the program financially in ways that most MEAC schools cannot. Their 2026 recruiting class is the program's strongest in twenty years.

The Bowl

The Celebration Bowl Is the Conference's True Championship

The MEAC's automatic FCS playoff bid is meaningful — but the Celebration Bowl is the game that defines the season. An MEAC program can go 10-1, win the conference, lose in the first round of the FCS bracket, and still be celebrated as Celebration Bowl champions if they beat the SWAC. The MEAC leads the all-time series 7-3. Every program's 2026 season is ultimately measured against that December stage.
