THE LONG WAIT · 2025

The Independent Path

DII independent programs compete without a conference affiliation, earning Super Region playoff bids through at-large selection based on their record and strength of schedule. Independence at the DII level is rare — most programs join conferences for scheduling consistency and automatic bid access. The handful that remain independent typically have geographic isolation, religious scheduling restrictions, or financial arrangements that make conference membership structurally difficult.

Can DII independent programs build the schedule and record that earns Super Region at-large consideration in 2026, or does conference automatic bid access make the independent path increasingly difficult to sustain?

Three Things to Watch

The Challenge

Scheduling Without a Conference

DII independents must build their own schedules — targeting Super Region opponents for meaningful wins while managing travel costs and home game access. A 9-1 independent can miss the Super Region while an 8-2 conference champion gets in automatically. The path requires near-perfect execution and a brutally honest assessment of what the Super Region committee values.

The Advantage

Flexibility as a Competitive Tool

Independent status gives DII programs scheduling flexibility that conference members don't have. They can target specific opponents for strength-of-schedule purposes, schedule home games that maximize attendance and revenue, and avoid conference road games that drain financial resources. For programs with unusual scheduling constraints — religious observances, geographic isolation — independence is the only viable path to DII competition.

Wild Card

Does the Super Region Format Penalize Independence?

The DII Super Region format rewards conference champions with automatic bids and fills remaining spots with at-large teams. In a competitive at-large field, an independent program needs not just a good record but a schedule that the committee can compare favorably to conference champions from recognized leagues. The format effectively makes independence a harder path in every year with strong at-large competition — which is most years.
