THE LONG WAIT · 2025
The Independent Path
DIII independents are programs that compete without a conference affiliation — scheduling games against conference members to build a record that can earn at-large consideration for the 32-team DIII bracket. Unlike FBS independence, which Notre Dame has turned into a scheduling and television advantage, DIII independence is usually a structural limitation that makes the bracket path harder. Independents must build a compelling record through scheduling games that demonstrate their quality, and the selection committee must weigh wins against conference champions who earned automatic bids.
Can a DIII independent build a bracket-worthy record in 2026 without the automatic bid that conference membership provides? The at-large path exists but requires a nearly perfect record against quality opponents.

Three Things to Watch
The ChallengeBuilding a Resume Without a Conference
DIII independent programs must schedule deliberately — mixing games against conference champions and bracket contenders to build a record that earns at-large consideration. The 32-team DIII bracket allocates most bids to conference champions, leaving a handful of at-large spots for the strongest non-champion programs. An independent needs to win almost every game and schedule opponents that the selection committee respects, a calculus that conference programs don't face because a single conference championship game win earns the automatic bid.
The AdvantageScheduling Flexibility and Geographic Freedom
Independence gives DIII programs something conference membership cannot: the ability to schedule any opponent at any time without conference approval. An independent can build a schedule that plays to its geographic strengths, schedules regional rivalries that draw fans, and avoids conference rotation games that might produce damaging early losses. For programs in transition — moving from one conference to another, launching a new program, or competing in a region where conference options are limited — independence can be a short-term advantage even if the bracket path is harder.
The HistoryDIII Independence as a Transitional Identity
Most DIII independent programs are in one of three situations: joining a conference that just expanded, recently losing a conference home, or launching a new program that hasn't yet established the relationships needed for conference membership. The DIII independent classification has turned over more frequently than FBS independence, which tends to be a permanent identity for major programs. For fans of independent DIII programs, the appeal is the same as at any level: a program that competes on its own terms, builds its own schedule, and wins on a field where nobody handed them anything — not even a conference to belong to.

Standings
Conference record determines standing. Power = neutral-field pts vs. all-level average. Last 5 = most recent game results.

Where We Stand
Round-robin power = strength of schedule-adjusted conference average, points vs. all-level average team. Record = Independent DIII's record vs. that conference across all games this season.
Independent DIII is a very small affiliation group this season, so its strength is shown with extra regression instead of being treated like a full league ecosystem.
