Mike Elko — Texas A&M, December 2023
Texas A&M 2024–The Duke defensive coordinator who took the Texas A&M job nobody outside the search committee thought he'd take — and stabilized the program in nine months.
Year-1: 9-3 · cleaned up post-Fisher roster · '24 Liberty Bowl
Elko inherited the post-Jimbo Fisher A&M — the largest buyout in college football history, a roster that had been recruited to a different scheme, and a fanbase that had spent the offseason in receivership. Year one (9-3 regular season, Liberty Bowl bid) was the cleanest post-coaching-fire stabilization of the 2020s. The hire was a return to the program where Elko had been defensive coordinator under Fisher; the Duke detour produced the head-coaching evidence A&M needed. The 2025 season will measure whether the floor is real.
